“As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart” Proverbs 27:19, NIV
Today has been a bit difficult. For me, and for the most part, life here in Costa Rica is happy and fulfilling. But days like today make it tough. There is no water. It went out about 7 am, and is still out (it’s going on 4 pm). It’s somewhat paralyzing. My daily task list has come to a screeching halt.
Bottled water has been my friend today. This was especially the case when I tried to cut up some green bananas to make ceviche. The sticky sap quickly reminded me that I should only be using the water for drinking. I can wait until this evening to shower . . . Lord willing. I’m getting restless. Without water, many of the things I want to accomplish will just have to wait until later. It’s reassuring, though, to have a back up for emergencies.
The King James version of Proverbs 27:19 came to mind as I’ve struggled today. “As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.” Water, like a mirror, reflects the image of a person. I know my heart, I know my weaknesses. Through examination, and a willingness for honesty, I know areas of my life that need to be worked on/changed. Others have their weaknesses and struggles. They may be similar to mine; they may be different. Either way, if our relationships are strong, open, and honest, we should be able to reveal one another’s issues and help each other with life’s challenges.
The lack of meaningful relationships causes stagnant living. You quickly begin to feel lost, hindered, ineffective, even useless. It helps to know there is someone for backup in times of need. You also have to be willing to provide assurance or support when that friend is in need.
The one good thing about today was the advance notice of the water outage. There was time to prepare. What can you be doing today to help someone (including yourself) who may need help tomorrow? Our plan is to always have extra water in case there is no notice. Life altering circumstances often result with little or no notice. There are some things for which we can never be prepared. When we can plan and prepare ahead, we definitely should. Ultimately, I’m assured Who is my Supply, whether I’m in need or not.
