Spiritually Dull

What a gloriously, refreshing rain we had this afternoon!  It was the first significant rain we’ve had since early December. Things here in Atenas are getting very dry. With the dryness comes a visibility of mountain ranges and areas we’ve not really noticed before. When everything is green, it all blurs together. The dryness actually gives an easier point of reference and sense of direction (which valley and mountain is which).

There’s a similarity with spiritual dullness/dryness. Have you ever been going along day after day, everything seemingly fine? By all appearances, everyone else thinks things in your life are going swell. There is a hunger/refreshing you are longing for. Only you know that something in your life definitely needs to change. You’re not the person you thought or hoped you’d be at this point in your life. Then you hear a sermon, a song, witness something incredible, overwhelming, confusing–things you weren’t aware of before suddenly become so apparent. You have a new drive and focus.

I don’t think God wants us to spend much time in our “dull and dry” state. But with our old/human nature, it’s easy to sit back and just let things happen. Before we realize it, everything in our lives becomes so blurred. We begin to feel vulnerable and lack purpose. We lose our effectiveness. We long for refreshing.

If you’re going through a dry/dull time, one thing that helps is spending time in God’s Word. It’s like today’s refreshing rain. “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account (Hebrews 4:12-13).”

A worship song from this morning’s church service has brought about a day of reflection and encouragement:

Ven, Espiritu Ven                            Come, Spirit Come

Ven, Espirtu ven                                              Come, Spirit come
Y lléname Señor                                              And fill me, Lord
Con tu preciosa unción                                With your precious anointing

Purificame y lávame                                     Purify and wash me
Renuévame y restárame                             Renew and restore me
Señor con tu poder                                         Lord, with your power
Purificame y lávame                                     Purify and wash me
Renuévame y restárame                             Renew and restore me
Señor, te queiro conocer                             Lord, I want to know you
