Same Hurts, Same Struggles

Iglesia Biblica de Atenas

Despite cultural differences people are people. They face the same hurts, same struggles, and same needs. This morning’s worship service was such a blessing!

The pastor called for a time of extended prayer. People of all ages came forward with petitions regarding everything from sickness, finances, hurting families, to broken marriages.

I’ve sat side by side with some of them for months now, and other than a brief time of greeting, I’ve not had any deep/meaningful conversations with them. But when asked to extend a hand in prayer, I had an intense desire to lift them up.

As the pastor prayed, one of my favorite passages of Scripture came to mind. I grabbed hold of it in a mighty way.

“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will . . . What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us evertything else? (Romans 8:26-28, 31 & 32, NLT)”

Pastor Oldemar went on to preach an inspiring message, imploring us not to believe the lies the enemy throws at us (Somos Libres Para Siempre). The congregation was more responsive than I’ve ever seen before. The same people who were laughing hysterically, at one point, were wiping away tears of grief/hurt just a moment later.

We sang a familiar song (in Spanish, of course), that also spoke to me.

Sendas Dios Hara

Sendas Dios hara
Donde peinsas que no hay
El obra de maneras que
No podemos entender
El me guiara a su lado esatare
Amor y fuerza me dara
Un camino hara donde no lo hay

Si camino en la soledad me guia
Agua en el desierto encontrare
Y la tierra pasara su palabra eternal es
El hara algo nuevo hoy.

God Can Make a Way

God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me
He will be my guide
Hold me closely to His side
With love and strength
For each new day
He will make a way
He will make a way

By a roadway in the wilderness
He’ll lead me
And rivers in the desert will I see
Heaven and earth will fade
But His Word will still remain
He will do something new today

So for those of you who are hurting, struggling, facing financial difficulties or broken marriages, may the “Holy Spirit plead on your behalf in harmony with God’s will”. Look to Him today. May you “see the rivers in the desert.” HE can make a way!
